I just recently reread Harold and the Purple Crayon with one of my students. It is one of my favorites. If you haven’t read it, it’s a quick read, and it’s very simple and magical. It’s about a boy who creates his life by drawing with his purple crayon! Drawing your own life — how metaphysical!
But the funny thing is I completely missed a major point of the story until reading it this weekend with my new writing student: the moon is always with him. As he goes from scene to scene, led by the swift strokes of his crayon, he always has the purple moon hanging above. In fact, it is the moon that helps him eventually find his way back home. It helps him realize he had the means to return all along. (Seems much like The Wizard of Oz, doesn’t it?)
Symbolically the moon is a reminder of his inner self. It’s always there, guiding, reminding us of the way. It always leads us home.
Much love and many blessings! ❤
